Proverbs 1:2-5

“To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:”

One thing that every single one of us needs more of is wisdom. More importantly we need spiritual wisdom above worldly wisdom. The purpose of the Proverbs are mapped out here in verses two through four stating that this book is designed to instruct us to and help us to gain understanding of how to live a life that is honoring to God. Our main focus as a Christian should be nothing more than being a servant to the God who saved our souls from eternal Hell and damnation. Because of Christ and only because of Christ are we set free from the bondage that sin has on our life.

There is a fascinating way that I like to look at what Christ did to free us from our sins. Sin put us deep into debt, at the Cross Jesus wrote a check to pay for our debt, and at the resurrection the check had been cleared, making us debt free! So, if we can grasp the importance of the payment that Christ has paid for us then we will all be more motivated to live a life full of God’s wisdom and live a life where we are constantly pursuing God’s purpose.

In verse 5 of this first Proverb we see the characteristics of a wise Christian. They increase in learning and understanding. Let’s ponder this question, am I genuinely seeking a closer relationship with Christ? See here is a major issue with “Christians” today, everybody wants to be labeled as a Christian but nobody wants to live the lifestyle of a Christian. What is getting in the way of your walk with Christ? Is it the parties you're going to, the boy or girl that you're afraid to lose, or maybe even school, work, or sports. The fact of the matter is that as Christians nothing should be more important than our relationship with Jesus Christ. Notice I said RELATIONSHIP because if you have a relationship with Christ that means that you are totally devoted to living a life for Him. Most people fall under the religious category, and a relationship and a religion are two totally different things. A religion will not get you into heaven, only a genuine relationship will.

So how do we become wise? It starts with leaning on God’s understanding and not our own. As we journey through this book together I pray that God will speak to you as He has spoken to me. Through this book we will continually be looking at God’s wisdom. Press on Christian solider, for everyday the battle is at hand.

Today seek God in prayer, seek His wisdom. Allow God to guide your steps and to give you His understanding. God’s leadership is greater than ours, and His steps lead us exactly where we need to be in our lives. Press into God today, I promise you He will speak to you!
